Avigyan Bhattacharya: Between Abstraction and Realism

MUMBAI | INDIA

Art is a journey that unfolds through passion, exploration, and deep introspection. For Avigyan Bhattacharya, an artist who blends photorealism with abstract techniques, this journey has always been about exploring the depths of the human psyche and emotions. His artistic vision, shaped by a rich cultural heritage from his childhood in Oman, and the support of his family and mentors, reflects a profound fascination with the contradictions that define the human experience. In this interview, Avigyan reveals how his cultural background, childhood experiences, and constant desire to explore new boundaries influence his creative process, and how he captures the essence of emotions through a fusion of abstraction and realism.

Avigyan Bhattacharya, Artist

Could you take us back to the moment when you first felt that art was your calling? How did your initial steps in the art world evolve, and how have you managed to infuse emotions into your works over time?

I don’t believe there was a specific moment when I knew I was meant to pursue art to the extent that I have. Rather, it was more of an understanding that I had a knack for it, which led me to explore deeper into what I was capable of, identify my limits, and most importantly, discover my preferences and work towards improving as an artist. I have always found human emotions experienced during strife or ambitious desires to be immensely powerful and fascinating. Therefore, I strive to find references and subjects that can carry these emotions when I conceptualize a piece on the canvas.

You are known for successfully blending abstract techniques with photorealism. Could you share how you approach creating such works? What processes and techniques do you use to achieve this unique fusion?

Many of my paintings have certain aspects with a lot of detail to achieve the highest level of photorealism possible. However, I have noticed that if I take a step back and treat the painting as a singular entity, rather than segmenting it into photorealistic and abstract sections, it allows me to transition between them much more seamlessly. As for techniques, I don’t use anything specific, as they vary greatly from one painting to another. Yet, there are two constants I always rely on.. For the photorealistic sections, patience is the greatest ally above any technique, and for the abstract sections, I believe that stepping out of your comfort zone and taking meaningful risks leads to the best results.

As an artist from Mumbai, you are surrounded by rich culture and history. How does this cultural heritage inspire you, and how is it reflected in your works?

Actually, most of my inspiration is derived from Arabian culture because I spent most of my childhood in Oman. This experience has become so ingrained in me that it’s almost part of my very being. Their rich cultural heritage and the fond memories I have of my time in Oman have shaped my artistic mindset in ways that are difficult to put into words. I think my paintings speak for themselves when it comes to Arabian inspirations. Deepening my understanding of this culture and appreciating its values is something I eagerly look forward to in the future.

Your works explore the human psyche and the entropy of emotions. What inspires you most in this theme, and how do you manage to depict these contradictions through your combination of abstraction and realism?

Human emotions have always intrigued my imagination, and as I’ve grown to understand them, I’ve realized that even the darkest emotions have positive aspects, and it's up to us to identify them. For example, there can be no ‘hope’ without ‘despair,’ and although this is an extreme example, it makes the point clear. The non-pragmatic nature of our emotions allows for these kinds of contradictions, and that’s precisely what has and will continue to inspire my artworks.

Your works have been recognized in numerous world records, including the Indian Book of Records and British World Records. How do these accolades influence your approach to artistic projects? How do you maintain originality while setting new standards?

I have been immensely fortunate to have received the various accolades that I have. Although they don’t directly affect my artworks, they serve as external inspirations, essentially merging with and strengthening my perseverance to continue mastering my craft. With every new artwork, I tend to select subjects or references that I am unsure about, ones with certain elements I need to figure out to bring the image in my mind to life on the canvas. I do this because it is intensely exciting, and the feeling of euphoria upon overcoming the obstacles in creating the artwork is unparalleled. I believe this process also allows me to constantly test my limits and maintain my originality.

The support from your family and mentors has been significant in your artistic journey. How have they inspired you to develop your unique style, and how have they helped you overcome challenges?

Simply saying that my parents have supported me throughout my life, including my artistic career, would be a gross understatement. I firmly believe that the only reason I have come this far is thanks to them. They have played the multi-layered roles of loving parents and harsh critics with such perfection that their presence in my life is, in itself, an inspiration to keep moving forward and master my craft. I also believe that foundational techniques are of utmost importance for an artist, and each of my mentors has helped me build this foundation. I like to compare this to a skilled blacksmith tempering and honing a flawless blade.

You have participated in international exhibitions, including World Art Dubai, where one of your pieces was sold. How do you choose themes for your works when you know they will be exhibited at such prestigious events? How do these experiences impact your future work?

I usually work within two broad themes: one heavily inspired by Arabian culture and the other delving deep into understanding the subtle nuances of human emotions. I believe it is important to remain true to oneself and create artworks accordingly, rather than trying to force oneself into a predetermined theme or style, which would likely lead to creative inhibition and a subpar piece. For me, that would be unacceptable. Exhibitions themselves are a reality check, as they allow me to understand and plan my next steps simply by observing senior artists and their impeccable creations. The inspiration from these venues is like the sweetest melody, and we only need to listen and absorb it in its full glory.

His art is a form of meditation on human nature, with a special focus on the contradictions and complexities that shape our everyday lives. In this interview, Avigyan provides insight into his creative process and the inspirations that fuel him, illustrating that art is much more than aesthetics—it's a medium for expression, exploration, and understanding the world around us. We eagerly anticipate seeing how his unique artistic style continues to evolve and impact the art scene worldwide.
